A calico cat is not a breed at all, but a color pattern. In order to be considered a calico the cat must have the following three colors (and must have all three combined on their coat): white, black and orange. If you see a calico cat, it’s safe to assume it’s a female. Why is this? Most cats with a calico coat are females because coat colors in cats are a sex linked trait. This means their colors are related to their gender. Females are symboled as XX due to having two X chromosomes. Males are XY as they only have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. he genetic coding for displaying black or orange color is found on the X chromosome. The color display is either orange or black. The coding for white is a completely separate gene.
So basically, since females have two X chromosomes they are able to have the two different colors, black and/or orange, as well as the white. Since males only have one X they can only have either orange or either black with the white (or without white).
However, calico colored/patterned cats CAN be male. This is when a male is XXY; having two X chromosomes like a female but stillposessing that Y chromosome that makes him male. Males that are XXY are generally inable to breed due to being sterile. This is similar to a condition in humans called Klinefelter’s syndrome, or XXY Syndrome
